REVIEW : Nikon's D500 - My New Favourite Crop Sensor DSLR

REVIEW : Nikon's D500 - My New Favourite Crop Sensor DSLR

The good people at Nikon have sent me a D500 to review.  While it has been in market since the spring, they are very popular and demo units have been scarce.  I received it in a kit form that included the 16-80/2.8-4 zoom lens.  I also received an SB-5000 speedlight and wireless radio kit as I think that the interaction with a speedlight will be important to serious amateurs and pros.

A Useful Tool You May Not Think Of

A Useful Tool You May Not Think Of

There are times when I wistfully think about the long past days where the only thing I thought about when I was going out to shoot was what I might discover.  I wish I were more inspired to go out and shoot more regularly so when I get a day where I am, I typically blow through the studio with some level of gusto, jump in the truck and start driving in the hope of discover.

My Quest for the Right Camera Strap

I have long been an advocate of getting rid of those bright and flashy OEM camera straps.  It's in the company's best interest to supply them because you are advertising for them for free as with any label, and the branding does provide a self esteem boost to those who need someone else's label for self-validation.   Or to prove how much money they spent on a camera.

REVIEW : Broncolor PARA 133

REVIEW : Broncolor PARA 133

Broncolor is a well respected name in professional studios around the world.  The Swiss manufactured products have earned their reputation for quality and consistency.  They tend to be priced accordingly but this doesn't mean that Broncolor gear is for high end pros only.  Photographers seeking top line equipment that is reliable, highly usable and robust should always take Broncolor into consideration.  I want to thank Canadian distributor Amplis Foto for making the unit available for this review.

When PRO no longer means PRO - The Apple MacBook Not Really Pro Debacle

When PRO no longer means PRO - The Apple MacBook Not Really Pro Debacle

I have been a Macintosh owner and user since 1984.  I like, with varying levels of enthusiasm, Macintosh OS in its various denominations.  I like the former simplicity and effectiveness of the Macintosh platform.  I am an Apple customer on iOS as well.  While I have disagreed with Apple decisions in the past, I am particularly disturbed by Apple's recent attempt to call at best prosumer products, professional products and by their continued abandonment of the professional creatives marketplace.

REVIEW : DXO ONE

REVIEW : DXO ONE

When DXO announced the DXO ONE, I wrote a scathing article asking if the superb software company had lost their mind.  Who would pay upwards of $600 for a camera that plugged into the Lightning port on an iPhone?  It's over a year later and the DXO ONE is now becoming readily available in the Canadian market.  Let's see how it fares.

REVIEW : The Metabones Speedbooster Ultra

REVIEW : The Metabones Speedbooster Ultra

I was recently doing a long term evaluation on Sony's awesome PXW-FS7 video camera and wanted to see how using my Canon L series glass on the camera would work out.  There are many mount converters available to mount alternate brand lenses on the Sony E mount, but the only one that said it would provide both complete aperture control as well as Autofocus was the Speedbooster Ultra from Metabones.
