Nikon Announces the D3400 and new AF-P Lenses

ANNOUNCEMENT

Nikon has announced the latest release in their D3XXX lineup of DSLR cameras, the D3400 along with four new AF-P lenses.

Let's start with the camera.  The D3400 is a 24MP DX (crop sensor) body built on a smaller chassis similar to the older D3300.  It avoids the optical low pass filter, so you have the potential for greater image sharpness.  The ISO range is 100 - 25600.  The camera can be fired in burst mode at up to 5fps.  The D3400 shoots FULL HD video at up to 1080p60.  The camera uses Nikon's Expeed 4 CPU and incorporates always on Bluetooth 4 LE so you can stay connected via Nikon Snapbridge to your smartphone for image sharing and posting.  The Guide Mode coaches new photographers through successful image making.  The D3400 has Nikon's fully automatic mode and supplements this with PASM modes as well as predefined Scene modes.  The body has an MSRP of $519.99 CDN making for a very low cost entry to the DSLR space.  The camera should be in stores early in September 2016.

In addition to the D3400, there are four new lenses announced today.  They are all of the AF-P design, where the P stands for Pulse Motor.  This is a stepper motor design, built to minimize focus noise, similar to Canon's STM lenses.  A P lens means that the camera's built in microphone will not be picking up the buzz of autofocus motors during video recording.  There are two 18-55/3.5-5.6 variants, with and without Vibration Reduction and two 70-300/4.5-6.3 variants, with and without Vibration Reduction.  Lens pricing is documented in the press release at the end of this article.

There is a price differential between the VR and non-VR lenses as one would expect.  Considering the value proposition of VR, I would be surprised to see customers who do their research going with the non-VR variants, but that those who shop solely on price or in stores where the staff know nothing about photography will likely end up with the non-VR lenses.  In my opinion, if you can get VR, get VR.

By simply turning the top Command Dial to this mode, users are prompted with a full range of capture options, and the camera guides them through various settings to create the desired image. Additionally, in-camera Scene Modes are an easy way to snap great pictures, without the need to adjust numerous settings. For even more creative shooting options, fun effects modes, such as Silhouette and Miniature Photography, help photographers make images that define their distinct style.
